A Guide to the Members of BTS

RM
Full name: Kim Namjoon
Birthday: September 12, 1994
Role: Leader, main rapper

RM became the first official member of BTS in 2010; he’s also the only remaining member of its original lineup. He’s known as the group’s leader and is typically its translator when the band appears on English-speaking programs. RM started his music career as a solo rapper, performing under several stage names (Large, Stealo, and Runch Randa). Eventually, Big Hit Entertainment noticed him and decided to develop a K-pop band around him.

Jin
Full name: Kim Seokjin
Birthday: December 4, 1992
Role: Vocalist

Jin is the oldest member of BTS, one of its main vocalists, and the group’s self-appointed “Worldwide Handsome” (a nickname Jin jokingly gave himself). After joining BTS in 2013, Jin went on to explore other ventures in the years after—while remaining with BTS, of course! He earned a degree in acting and art in 2017 and became the co-owner of a Japanese restaurant in Seoul, South Korea (due to his love of food and cooking).

Suga
Full name: Min Yoongi
Birthday: March 9, 1993
Role: Lead rapper

Suga is one of BTS’s main rappers, known for performing as a solo underground rapper before joining the group. He performed mainly under the stage name “Gloss,” and now, outside of BTS, he uses the stage name “Agust D” for solo rap music and “By Suga” as a commercial producer. In his solo career, he’s known for addressing topics like mental health and concern for the younger generations.

J-Hope
Full name: Jung Hoseok
Birthday: February 18, 1994
Role: Main dancer, rapper, vocalist

J-Hope is the group’s energetic dancer—and sometimes choreographer as well. He got his start in dancing and was a member of a street dance team named Neuron. He also competed on multiple South Korean competition shows until Big Hit Entertainment noticed and recruited him. In addition to being one of the best dancers in BTS, J-Hope is also known for his cheerful, upbeat energy!

Jimin
Full name: Park Jimin
Birthday: October 13, 1995
Role: Main dancer and lead vocalist

Jimin was originally a dancer, studying contemporary and ballet in high school. After joining BTS in 2013, he became a dancer and vocalist for the group, and he’s pretty amazing at both—even though he only had 6 months of training before the band’s debut (which is a much shorter period than the others had)! As a member of BTS, he’s also been able to branch off into solo music and, to date, has released two solo albums (Face and Muse).

V
Full name: Kim Taehyung
Birthday: December 30, 1995
Role: Lead dancer and vocalist

V is BTS’s baritone vocalist, known for his deep voice and impressive range. He was initially the “secret” member of BTS before the band’s debut, as he joined by auditioning directly for Big Hit Entertainment and was mostly unknown. But, like all the others, he’s definitely taken off after BTS’s incredible success; he’s even gone on to take several acting roles (and he broke the Guinness World Record for being the fastest to reach 1 million and 10 million followers on Instagram).

Jungkook
Full name: Jeon Jung-kook
Birthday: September 1, 1997
Role: Main vocalist and dancer

Jungkook made it to BTS by auditioning for Superstar K, a South Korean talent show, where he was noticed by Big Hit Entertainment (among other talent agencies). He was only 15 when he joined BTS, but thankfully, he had the other boys looking out for him! In addition to performing with BTS, Jungkook has a few different solo ventures under his belt, including his first solo album (Golden) in 2023.
