Bedroom Decorating 101

Your bedroom is supposed to be your safe haven, that place you can go to at the end of the day (or just whenever, honestly) and get some peace and quiet. It’s where you sleep, study, watch movies, make art, laugh with friends. It reflects the person you are, so it should be just as interesting and unique as you! That’s why we’ve put together a quick guide on how to decorate your digs, whether you’re moving into a college dorm, settling into a new house, or just dreaming of making your own space someday.

1. Consider the room’s size.
Your room size determines a lot about what can go in your room! If you have a small room, like a dorm, you’ll have to use your space wisely, and make a few sacrifices to fit everything you want inside, like opting for a smaller bed so you can cram a huge TV in there. If you have a large room, though, you have the opposite challenge—you’ll have to fill it up or decorate it strategically to make sure it doesn’t look so empty (unless empty is your thing).

2. Choose a color scheme.
The right interior color palette can change the vibe of a room completely. Painting a room with cool colors, like blues and greens, tend to lift your mood and grant an airy, light feeling to a space. Warm colors, like reds and yellows, are comforting, and can make a bedroom super cozy. And remember, it’s not just the color that’s on your walls—the color of your furniture and other decor also plays a part.

3. Get some staple furniture.
Of course, a bed is a must, but think about what kind of bed you like! Do you want an extravagant canopy bed? A compact bed that folds into a couch or a closet? A reclining or novelty bed? Then, add other staples. If you’re a student, you’ll need a spacious desk. A comfy chair or bean bag adds another place to sit for guests, or just for when you don’t want to spend more time on your mattress. Other, extra furniture like standing lamps, bookshelves, storage shelves, and things like that can add some much-needed utility. Don’t forget to arrange your furniture so it’s both functional and comfortable!

4. Decorate, decorate, decorate!
Once all the basics are figured out, it’s time to add smaller, personal touches! It’s good to stick with a theme, even if that theme is just “Things I Like.” Get some posters or wall art that you love to look at. Lamps and other bespoke light fixtures can help you control the vibe. A good area rug can pull everything together, while knickknacks and small objects scattered around shelves and on desks show off your personality. Remember, as long as it makes you happy, you’re doing it right!
