Do you want to call someone directly from your Gmail account? Even without a phone number or physical phone, you can place calls to others in one-on-one conversations or a group call from your computer, smartphone, or tablet! Read on to learn how to call other Google accounts in Gmail.

  1. Open Gmail in your browser or the Gmail mobile app.
  2. Click or tap the "Chats" tab.
  3. Open a direct message with the person you want to call.
  4. Click or tap the video camera or call button.

  1. Go to https://mail.google.com/mail/ in a web browser on your computer. You'll see a list of direct messages under "Direct Messages or listed on the Home page of the "Chat" tab.
    • If you aren't signed into your Gmail account, do so now to continue.
    • Use this method if you want to call another Google account using Gmail on your computer. You can talk to the other person on their phone, tablet, or computer using Gmail!
    • To be able to talk to the other person, you need to make sure your web browser has permission to use your microphone, which you can usually find in Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions.
    • If you don't see the "Chat" tab, you'll need to change your display settings so you can see it. To do so, click the gear icon and Customize" under "Apps in Gmail". Make sure "Chat" and "Meet" are checked then click Done.
  2. You'll see this video camera icon in the top right corner of your conversation.
    • If Gmail doesn't already have permission to use your camera and microphone, a window will pop up and ask for those permissions. You can allow all access or make the call purely audio by denying permission to use the camera.
    • Alternatively, click the video camera icon during the call to turn off your camera. You can also click it before the call is answered.

  1. The chat tab looks like a speech bubble in the middle of the tabs at the bottom of your screen.
    • If you don't see the "Chat" tab, you have to add it. Tap the three-line menu (hamburger icon) in the top left corner of your screen, then select Settings. Choose an account if you have more than one Google account, then tap the box next to "Chat" to check the box.
    • Use this method to call another Google account using Gmail on your phone or tablet. This is helpful to use if you don't have someone's phone number but have their Gmail instead.
