Dialing a Vietnamese phone number from another country can be a tricky, expensive process. Luckily, if you have all the right codes, it can be a lot easier. If calling on a landline, dial your country's exit code, then dial 84. Then, follow with the area code or mobile code, and finish by dialing the local number of the person you're calling. If you have access to Wi-Fi and a capable device, you can save money and effort by calling through an app.
How to Call Vietnam from a Landline or Mobile
First, dial your country's exit code. In the US and Canada, this is 011. Follow with Vietnam's country code, which is 84. Then dial the provided area or mobile code, but drop any leading zeroes. Finally, finish by dialing the local number to your contact.
Steps
Calling on the Phone
-
Dial your country's exit code. When you want to call someone in Vietnam and you're in a different country, the first thing you'll need to do is dial your country's exit code to get the call out of your country. These vary from country to country.[1] In this article, we will use 011 as an example, which is the exit code for the United States. Jump ahead to see all the exit codes for countries around the world.
- Alternatively, if you're on a cell phone, simply dial a + instead of the exit code. To get the + sign, press and hold the 0 button until it changes to a plus.
-
Enter Vietnam's country code. The country code for Vietnam is 84.[2]Advertisement
-
Dial either the area code or the mobile code. After dialing 84, you'll need to either enter the area code for the city you're trying to reach (which will be 2 to 3 digits)[3] or the mobile code (which is one digit after dropping the leading zero).
- Area codes for landlines are almost all formatted as 02xx. However, you should always drop the leading zero, which is called a trunk code or trunk 0.
- Mobile codes are most often 09x, but might also be 03x, 05x, 07x, or 08x. Always drop the leading zero. The "x" will be replaced with a number that correlates to the mobile phone carrier that number belongs to.
-
Dial the rest of the phone number. Vietnamese phone numbers are 7 to 8 digits long. Including the trunk 0, Vietnamese landline numbers are 11 digits long, and mobile numbers are 10.
- Example: If you are calling from a US landline and are trying to call someone in Hanoi with the VNPT phone number 555 1234, you would dial 011 84 243 555 1234.
- Example: To call a Vietnamese Vinaphone mobile phone with the number 555 1234 from your cell phone, you would dial +84 91 555 1234.
Using Apps
-
Get connected to Wi-Fi. Before calling, you'll need a device with Wi-Fi capabilities, like an iPhone. Take the device to a location that has an accessible Wi-Fi network and type in the password if one is needed.[5] Hostels, hotels, and internet cafes are good places to try.
-
Try calling through Skype. Skype allows you to call or message fellow Skype users for free on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Ask for the Skype name of the person you're trying to reach, or try to find them by typing their full name, email, or phone number into the search bar. Then, add them as a contact by pressing the green circle icon with a plus sign. When you're ready to call, either press the blue icon with the picture of a video camera or the blue icon with the picture of a telephone.[6]
- For a small fee, you can also call landlines from your Skype account.
-
FaceTime someone in Vietnam. If you're calling from an Apple device and the person you're contacting has an Apple device, consider calling them via FaceTime. FaceTime is a free Apple video calling service. Go to your settings, click FaceTime to ensure it's turned on, and then pull up the contact you want to call. Click on the telephone icon that's next to the word “FaceTime” instead of the one that's next to the word “mobile.”[7]
-
Use the calling feature in Facebook Messenger. If both you and the person you wish to call have Facebook accounts, sign into Facebook, download Facebook's free Messenger app, and open the app. Then type in the person's name and tap the phone icon in the upper right-hand corner to call them.[8]
-
Call with WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a free calling app owned by Facebook that is commonly used for international calling. Download the app and press the phone icon on the contact page in the top right-hand corner to start the call.
