Do you want to save a photo from Google Maps to your computer? If you've tried to download a user-uploaded photo from Google Maps but couldn't save it, you can do so with a secret workaround. Or, if you'd rather save a Street View image or a map, you can take a screenshot. This wikiHow article will teach you the easiest ways to download an image from Google Maps on your Mac or Windows computer.
Saving Images from Google Maps
- To save a photo somebody uploaded to Google Maps, you'll need to enable Developer Tools in Chrome.
- Once enabled, click the arrow next to "Frames," click the arrow next to "Image," right-click the image, and select Save as.
- To download a map as an image, go to the location in Google Maps, then take a screenshot.
Steps
-
Open Google Maps on your computer. Unfortunately, you can't download a photo from Google Maps in the mobile app. You can use any web browser on your computer to download an image from Google Maps, including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
- This method will work to save any image a user or business uploaded to Google Maps. If you want to save a Street View image instead, you'll need to take a screenshot.
-
Search for a destination. You'll see the search bar at the top-left corner of the page. You need to search for a destination to find images associated with that location.Advertisement
-
Click the first photo for the destination. This opens a larger version of the photo.
-
Select the photo you want to download. You can click All to see all photos or use the categories at the page's top-left corner. Once you click the photo you want to download, a larger version will open on the left side of the page.
-
Open Chrome Developer Tools. You can do this in several ways:
- Menu: Click ⋮ > More tools > Developer Tools.
- Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + I.
- Mac: Press Cmd + Opt + I.[1]
-
Click the arrow next to "Frames". This is the last section on the menu on the left side of the text.
- If you don't see "Frames" at the bottom, make sure "Application" is active. It's in the menu at the top with Elements and Console; you might need to click >> to find it.
- When you click the arrow next to "Frames," a long menu expands.
-
Click the arrow next to "Image". It'll expand to show every image, including logos, on the page.
-
Find your image and right-click it. Click through the photos until you find the one you want to save. Right-click or Control-click it once found.
- Make sure you right-click the file name and not the thumbnail. Saving the thumbnail will result in downloading a small version of the original image.
-
Click Save image. Use Finder or File Explorer to navigate to a location to save the image, then click Save. This saves the image to your computer in its original quality.
-
Go to https://maps.google.com in any browser. You can take a screenshot of anything on Google Maps, including satellite maps and Street View images.
-
Search for a destination. Use the search bar at the top to find the location you want to screenshot.
-
Open the image or map you want to download. For example, if you want to download a Street View image, drag the orange person icon from the bottom-right corner of Google Maps to the desired map location, then use your mouse to position your view from the desired angle.
- You can use the + and - at the bottom-right corner of the Street View image to zoom in or out.
-
Press your computer's screenshot shortcut. This allows you to take a quick screenshot of the part of the screen you want to save.
- Windows: Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool, which starts in rectangular mode. Click and drag a rectangle around the image. When you lift your finger from the mouse, the screenshot will be saved to your clipboard. You can then click the image preview to open it, and click the disk icon to save. Alternatively, you can paste it into any app by pressing Ctrl + V.[2]
- Mac: Press Shift + Command + 4 to open the screenshot tool. Your cursor will turn into a crosshair, which you can then drag around the image you want to save. When you let go of the mouse button, the image will be saved to your desktop.[3]
