What Is Normal?

According to the American Psychological Association, normal is something that’s considered “standard, average, typical, or healthy” and is “often applied to behavior that conforms to a culturally accepted norm.”[1] So, what does this mean exactly? Well, normalcy is all dependent on other factors.

In general, if something is “normal” it’s what’s typical or expected. For instance, if you go to the doctor, they may say your blood pressure is in a “normal” range based on your age and size—the numbers are expected to be in a certain range. If your blood pressure is abnormal, it’s not typical and may be concerning for your health.

But from a sociological lens, the concept of normal is a bit more complex. What you define as normal may not be the same as your best friend’s definition, and that’s okay! The concept of normal depends on personal and societal beliefs. For example, if you grew up wearing shoes inside, you may think that’s normal, but someone who hasn’t may think it’s absurd. There’s no right or wrong—there’s just a difference in how things are done.

So, what does this mean for you personally? Whether or not someone believes you’re “normal” shouldn’t define you—being yourself is what matters most!
