The History of Little Miss

In 1971, Roger Hargreaves, an English author, released a series of children’s books called Mr. Men. Each wacky and vibrantly colored character represented a distinct personality trait or behavior. For instance, Mr. Tickle was the first Mr. Men character to take the world by storm, and as you would’ve guessed, he loves to tickle people. Children fell in love with the fun illustrations and simply moral storylines of these characters, and in the 1980s, Hargreaves began introducing his Little Miss characters.

So, who are Little Misses? Like Mr. Men, Little Misses are silly characters with specific traits and attitudes. Each character is unique and showcases a variety of likes and dislikes associated with their identity. For example, Little Miss Sunshine (one of the most popular characters) is yellow, always smiling, and loves to make other people happy—she’s practically a pocket full of sunshine!

With the book series’s success, the BBC released several animated shows and songs about Mr. Men and Little Miss. Hargreaves’s creations captured everyone’s hearts in the 80s, and they continue to do so today.

In 2021, Little Miss became a viral meme, with social media creators posting their own toxic or quirky traits as Little Miss characters. Photoshopping their own Little Miss creations, users came up with unique names like “Little Miss Oversharer,” “Little Miss Main Character,” or “Little Miss Can’t Go to Bed Without Imagining A Fake Scenario.”

Whether or not you resonate with one of the mainstream Little Miss characters or feel like you have a meme-worthy personality trait, it’s fun to imagine who’d you be in Hargreaves’s Mr. Men and Little Miss world.
