A Brief History of the Magic 8 Ball
While the Magic 8 Ball inspects your future, let’s dive into the 8 Ball’s past!
The Magic 8 Ball was invented in 1944 by Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman. Carter got his inspiration for a fortune-telling toy from his mother, Mary, who was a clairvoyant and claimed to speak to ghosts, including the ghost of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Whoa!
This was around the same time the famous (or infamous?) Ouija board was selling like hotcakes, and it was expected that another future-telling item would do just as well—but contrary to expectations, the first rendition of the Magic 8 Ball, the Syco-Seer (which looked more akin to a traditional crystal ball), was not a hit! It was in 1950 that Brunswick Billiards came along with the suggestion to make up the fortune-telling toy to look like an 8 Ball and use it as a promotional item—little did they know, that promotional item would turn into a wildly popular novelty item! Thus, the Magic 8 Ball was born, and it continues to share its mystical wisdom with us to this very day.
How? Using a 20-sided die floating in murky liquid within the ball. The die includes 10 positive answers, 5 vague answers, and 5 negative answers. The answers are written on raised white type, so that the text shows up clearly when pressed against a tiny window.
The Magic 8 Ball is currently manufactured by Mattel.
