If you have curly or wavy hair and want to change up your look, you may have considered straightening your hair. Unfortunately, some chemical hair straighteners contain harmful chemicals, like sulfur, which can damage the health of your hair and can make it even frizzier over time. Luckily, you can use a milk and honey spray, a castor and soybean oil mixture, a celery leaf extract, and combing methods to naturally and safely get rid of your curls. These all-natural, no heat solutions will relax your hair but must be performed daily if you want to keep your hair straight.
How to Naturally Straighten Curly Hair for Men
- Pour ½ c (120 ml) of milk and ½ c (120 ml) of water into a spray bottle.
- Mix in 1 tbsp (15 ml) of honey and spritz your hair with the spray.
- Comb your hair, let the spray sit for 30 minutes, and then rinse it out.
Steps
-
Mix 1/2 cup (120 ml) of milk and 1/2 cup (120 ml) of water together. Mix the ingredients in an empty spray bottle so that you can easily apply the mixture to your hair. You can use cow's milk, almond milk, or coconut milk for the solution. Shake the spray bottle vigorously to incorporate the ingredients.
- This method will relax slightly wavy hair, but won't straighten kinky or very curly hair.[1]
- Milk has vitamin E and proteins which will strengthen and straighten your hair.
-
Pour a tablespoon of honey into the bottle. Add the honey to the solution and shake the spray bottle again to mix the honey with the milk. Honey will add a natural sheen to your hair.[2]
- A drop of coconut or almond oil may also be helpful in reducing frizz.

Spray the solution onto your hair. Thoroughly wet your hair with the milk and water solution, making sure to spray both the roots and the ends of your hair strands. Work the solution into your scalp with your fingertips.
-
Comb your hair straight. Comb from the root of your hair, all the way down to your hair shaft, working the milk and honey solution into your hair. If you have wavy hair, you should see the strands start to get straight. If you have kinky or curly hair, the solution will make your hair look more healthy, but may not remove your curls.[3]
-
Let the solution sit in your hair for 30 minutes. The vitamins and nutrients in the mixture will start to soften and straighten your hair. You may want to cover your head with a shower-cap or put a towel around your shoulders so that the solution doesn't drip on you.[4]
-
Wash the solution out with cold water. Make sure to rinse your hair well and remove any milk or honey that hasn't been absorbed. If you leave the solution in your hair it may create an unpleasant smell as it dries.[5]
-
Comb your hair and let it dry. Comb your hair with a wide toothed comb while it's still wet.[6] Get all of the knots and curls out of it as you brush it. Then, you can let your hair air dry or you can blow dry it for a more finished look.
- Be careful not to blow dry your hair too often, as heat styling tools can damage your hair.[7]
-
Mix castor oil with soybean oil in a bowl. Measure 2 tablespoons (29.5 ml) of castor oil with 1 tablespoon (14.7 ml) of soybean oil and mix the two oils until they are well incorporated. Castor oil will help reduce frizz in your hair and soybean oil will help straighten the strands.[8]
- Some companies produce all-natural castor oil creams specifically designed to straighten hair. You can find these products online, salons, or in the hair aisle at a department store.
-
Heat the oil slightly. Pour the oil into a pan and heat it until it's warm or put the mixture into the microwave for no more than 5-10 seconds. As the oil gets warm, it will become less viscous and will be easier to handle.[9]
-
Rub the oil into your hair and scalp. Apply some of the warm oil to the palms of your hands. Run your fingers through your hair to disperse the oil onto your scalp and hair. Make sure to cover each strand so that your hair straightens uniformly.[10]
- Apply enough oil so that your strands get saturated by the oil but don't overdo it and drench your hair in oil or your hair may look greasy.
-
Cover your hair with a damp towel and wait for 30 minutes. Wet down your towel with warm water. Wrapping your head in a warm, damp towel will help the oils soak into your hair follicles.[11]
-
Rinse out the oil. Once you've let the oil soak into your hair for 30 minutes, undo the towel wrapped around your head. Your hair should already start to look more straight. Run your head under cold water, making sure to remove as much excess oil as you can.[12]
-
Chop up 10-12 celery leaves. Purchase some celery from the grocery store and chop the leaves from the stalks. Use a food processor to chop them up until it creates a celery paste.[15]
- The nutrients in celery will help straighten and improve the health of your hair.
-
Mix the celery juice and 1/4 cup (59 ml) of water in a spray bottle. Pour the celery extract into a spray bottle and then add the water and shake the bottle. This will be the solution that you use to straighten your hair. To prevent clogs, you can filter the solution with a muslin cloth before you pour it in the spray bottle.[16]
-
Let the solution sit overnight. As the solution sits, the water and celery extract will mix and should thicken. Once the solution is somewhat thick, you can use it.
-
Spray the solution on your hair. Saturate all of your hair. Continue to spray until your head is wet with the solution.[17]
-
Brush your hair with a wide-tooth comb. Concentrate on the knots and curls as you brush your hair. Continue to brush your hair until it looks straight.
-
Let the solution sit in your hair for 30 minutes. Wrap a towel around your shoulders so that your wet hair doesn't drip on you. As you sit there, the nutrients from the solution will soak into your hair.[18]
-
Wash the solution out with cold water. Run cold water through your hair and use your hands to wash it out. Agitate your hair with your fingers and continue rinsing until all of the celery solution is washed out of your hair.[19]
-
Brush your hair straight as it dries. After you get out of the shower, brush your hair with a wide toothed comb every five minutes. As your hair dries, it should dry straighter than if you just let it air dry.[22]
- If you want to dry your hair faster, you can sit in front of a fan.
-
Wrap your head in a towel. While your hair is still wet, comb it back and secure it with bobby pins. Then, wrap your hair with a towel. This will reduce frizz and is especially useful if you want to straighten your hair before you go to sleep.[23]
-
Roll your hair in large hair rollers. If you have longer hair, you can put your hair in rollers to straighten it. Find the largest rollers available at a salon and roll your hair in them after getting out of the shower. When you pull out the rollers, you should have straighter hair.[24]

QuestionWhy is it best to avoid cotton towels when drying your hair?Christine GeorgeChristine George is a Master Hairstylist, Colorist, and Owner of Luxe Parlour, a premier boutique salon based in the Los Angeles, California area. Master Hair Stylist & ColoristWhat cotton does is it creates friction against the hair which then separates the curl patterns or the wave patterns of your hair. I would suggest grabbing an old t-shirt or a microfiber towel and scrunching the water out of the hair instead. -
QuestionI'm using a milk and honey spray. Should I use boiled milk or unboiled milk, and if I make this spray how many days will it be good for? Should I keep it in the fridge?Community AnswerDon't boil the milk. It should work for a few days if you're careful and preserve it. Store the milk and honey in the fridge.
-
QuestionWhich method is more effective and can keep hair straight for a longer time?Community AnswerMake sure you brush your hair before bed and in the morning. If possible, brush your hair more often throughout the day. Also, use good and trustworthy shampoos and conditioners. Another tip is don't use shampoo and conditioner 2-in-one, because it is less effective on your hair. Brush your hair straight after you have washed it while it is still wet.
