Steaming your growing room in between harvests is the best method. This mold can live on pots and in soil, and a non-sterile growing environment is one of the main ways that it spreads to new crops. The recommended way to sterilize your growing room is by steaming it at 150 °F (66 °C) for 12 hours. - This recommendation is for a room with substrate, or a fertile patch to grow mushrooms in. If you don’t use substrate, then steam the room for 24 hours instead of 12.
- If you don’t have a major growing operation, then you probably don’t have a steaming system installed in your growing room. In this case, rent a commercial steamer, roughly the size of a shop vac or oven, to sterilize just the substrate and your growing pots. Run the steamer for 20-24 hours to kill any mold spores.^{[6]
