Olive oil can rehydrate damaged hair, replenishing lost moisture, but it can't fix damage. The only way hair can be truly repaired is by growing out the damage.

Olive oil is a fairly heavy oil and not ideal for leaving in the hair. For a lighter oil, try Argan oil or Jojoba; both are suitable for leave-in wear.

Yes, regular shampoo will work, but a clarifying shampoo will work better. With a regular shampoo, you'd need to shampoo your hair several times before removing all of the oil from your hair.
  • Question
I don't want to wash the honey out of my hair after applying it. Can I leave it in?

  • Question

    Community Answer
If you are having trouble getting olive oil off of your neck and ears, you can try making a paste out of baking soda (just add water to baking soda) and rub it on the affected areas. Rinse it off in the shower with warm water. This should get rid of any oily residue on your skin.
  • Question
Is there an alternate way to get the greasy feeling out of your hair without using detergent or baking soda?
    Community Answer

Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo multiple times, until your hair doesn't feel greasy.
  • Question
Why do I have to wash it out with dish soap to get the rest of the oil out?
    Community Answer

  • Question
Are any of these products bad for your hair?
    Community Answer

You can begin the cleansing process by adding the shampoo directly to your hair with the oil on it. Massage the shampoo into your hair, and then rinse it out with warm water.
  • Question
Can shampoo and conditioner work to get out the olive oil?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Yes, but do not start by wetting your hair. Use diluted shampoo (1 part shampoo to 3 parts water) first. Massage your scalp gently until the shampoo stops foaming - which is a signal that it has dissolved as much oil as it can. Rinse well with lukewarm water and gently towel-dry your hair. Repeat the procedure and finish with an apple cider vinegar rinse that you let sit while you wash your body. It makes conditioner superfluous. Rinse by the end of the shower.

Bar soap is much harsher on your hair than regular shampoo or clarifying shampoo. It can dry out your hair and make it much more brittle. It's best to stick with regular shampoo or clarifying shampoo.
