Oil is secreted from the follicles in your scalp. This oil is called sebum. The skin all over your body produces self-lubrication. If it didn't, it would crack and you'd get infections.

Shampoo removes excess oil, dirt, and sweat from your skin but it can over-clean and strip natural oils. This can be bad for the hair, especially if you are washing every day.

No, hair will not clean itself. However, if you have the right hair texture and skin type you may be able to achieve hair that doesn't need to be shampooed because it self-regulates its own oil production.

  • Question
If I use egg or vinegar to wash my hair, won't it smell bad?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Any smell will go away after rinsing.
  • Question
Is this method good for color treated hair?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Going to a non-shampoo lifestyle may actually help support lasting color. Many colors (particularly warm colors and especially reds) tend to wash out quickly, partially due to the harshness of shampoos and a lot of products. Water alone and most shampoo alternatives tend to be much gentler and are less likely to strip the color. That's definitely a plus! I have had just about every color of hair under the rainbow and I can honestly say that washing with just water or going easy on shampoo alternatives has allowed me to have vibrant color last for months, discounting regrowth.
