  • Question
Do I need to cut my hair to look androgynous as a girl?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
No way! Rock your own style. Don't let anyone tell you how you should dress or how long or short your hair should be. What's most important is that you feel like you. There are plenty of guys with long hair and girls with short hair so hair length does not have to correspond to any particular gender/identity.
  • Question
What if I live at home and this kind of thing isn't allowed? My mother won't let me cut my hair and she always makes me wear girly clothes. What should I do? BTW, this really helped.
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Tell her that you feel like you should make your own choices on how you dress, and not have other people decide for you. Explain why it's important to you. Tell her that you respect her opinion, but you think you should dress how you want. She may not come around right away, be persistent.
  • Question
How do I become popular if I am queer?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Be outgoing and kind to everyone, even people you don't like. Get involved in activities - theater and poetry tend to be very accepting of the LGBTQ community, though you can do whatever you like. Embrace your style and queer identity, and be yourself.
  • Question
What kinds of clothing can I wear in summer?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
A pair of shorts that hits 2 - 3 inches above the knee is good for both feminine and masculine people. Graphic t-shirts are good for casual looks, and short-sleeve button-ups or polo shirts work for more dressy occasions.
  • Question
I like wearing very goth clothes, so how can I make my goth style more androgynous?
    Sylghouls
    Sylghouls
    Top Answerer
Goth already lends itself well to androgyny with a lot of the flowier, less body-conforming clothes that have gained popularity in recent years within the subculture. Try to focus on layering clothing pieces that distort your silhouette when selecting outfits.
  • Question
I have medium length hair. How could I style my hair to look more androgynous without cutting my hair?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Try doing some dreadlocks, a bun, or make your hair curlier to make it look a bit shorter.
  • Question
I’m AFAB nonbinary, but I am short (4'9!) and naturally curvy despite dieting and exercising, baggy clothes look ridiculous on me, and I still look very feminine. Will I ever look androgynous without T?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
It really depends on what androgynous looks like to you. If you're asking if there's any way to make your body look less curvy/more androgynous without taking hormones or pursuing surgical options, the answer is no, probably not (aside from binding). But you don't have to look androgynous to be nonbinary. There are nonbinary people that look a lot like their assigned gender, and nonbinary people that don't. It doesn't really make any difference how you present yourself, it's entirely up to you.
  • Question
Sometimes I want to look and act like a guy, or girl, or neither, or a mix of both. But I'm comfortable with my name and pronouns. What does this mean?
    Afton Jennings
    Afton Jennings
    Community Answer
Gender fluidity is when your gender switches around. About the name and pronouns, wanting to change your name is not indication of being trans, and pronouns don't always equal gender! If you want to search more about gender fluidity, then do so, especially if that feels like a label you are comfortable with.
  • Question
I'm an AMAB genderfluid teen and I have a really thin, rectangular body shape. Would wearing skinny jeans and a oversized hoodie make me seem more feminine since it would cover I have a flat chest?
    Charlotte Kennedy
    Charlotte Kennedy
    Community Answer
Yes. However, plenty of girls and feminine people have flat chests, so it's okay if you don't wear them.
  • Question
I'm not exactly out yet, and so I don't exactly have neutral clothes, instead I have "girly " clothes. How can I look more neutral using the clothes that I have?
    Your_local_enby
    Community Answer
You could layer your clothes and wear more neutral colours like black, blue and green. Also, maybe wear a long sleeve top with a t shirt on top and ask a male friend or sibling if they can let you borrow a hoodie. Wear baggy trousers. There are ones made for girls so if you have any, wear them. You could also wear like jogging bottoms and baggy sports clothes, as these provide an androgynous look.

  • Question
I am a bisexual girl and I feel only a little on the non-binary side. Is this normal? Should I pack?
    Ruby
    Ruby
    Top Answerer
That is normal, you might want to look into what being a "demigirl" is, but don't feel you have to assign yourself a label. You can pack if it makes you happy, it's up to you. If you do decide to pack, you can read the article Pack for Transgender Men (the instructions work for any AFAB person of any gender).
  • Question
I am gender questioning and want to look more androgynous but my mom doesn’t want me to cut my hair and I’m scared to dress differently, how else can I appear more androgynous?
    Skyler
    Skyler
    Community Answer
Assuming you are AFAB, try doing more gender-neutral makeup, or none at all! Sneak in pride colors to your outfit that there is no way your mother would know what means. Depending on your race, certain long hairstyles can look very androgynous. Avoid generally feminine colors like pink, and with certain exceptions, don't wear skirts or dresses. Also, discuss this topic with your mother. Tell her that you are further exploring your self-identity and just want to see if this suits you.
  • Question
I’m very confused with my gender identity I’m a biologically a female and thinking about this makes me numb inside can I have some tips (I think I am nonbinary).
    Skyler
    Skyler
    Community Answer
Try on a different name and pronouns. How do they make you feel? Try dressing in androgynous clothes. Use FaceApp or something similar to try on a short haircut. Think about your most internalized self. Do you feel in-between the gender lines? Another think that helps me, as a genderfluid person, to identify my daily gender is to look in the mirror. Do your masculine of feminine features show more? What about your gender-neutral ones?
  • Question
My hair is a super dark brown, and I want to dye it a kind of neutral pink. Will I have to bleach first?
    Skyler
    Skyler
    Community Answer
Most likely. Dye doesn't show up very well on dark colored hair. The dark look is very neutral looking, if that gives you any support.
  • Question
I was born female but I'm leaning more male now that I'm older. The problem is is that i have all female clothes that still fit me. What can I do to make female clothes look more male?
    Emotrashh
    Emotrashh
    Community Answer
Try either wearing jeans or buying new jeans. Jeans are the most androgynous pants along with sweatpants, but jeans are more stylized. Tuck in your shirts with a belt if you're wearing jeans, or let the shirt hang loose with sweatpants. If you are looking for a more generic male appearance, don't wear leggings. If you're trying to be more androgynous, leggings look good with knee length shorts over them.

Get a hat (maybe a beanie.) And tie your hair up in a high ponytail, and push the hair to where the bottom of the ponytail is on your forehead and looks like "bangs". Then slide your hat on and you will have short hair with almost no effort.

  • Question
I don’t have enough confidence to cut my hair. How do I feel more masculine with longer hair?
    RedIsSus
    RedIsSus
    Community Answer
You can tie your hair into a "man bun" and you could even put a beanie on top to hide that. You could try more typically masculine styles for guys with long hair too. Hats will become your best friend. They are very useful and can also help you "hide" your hair so it appears shorter.
  • Question

    Iris8989
    Iris8989
    Community Answer
Yes, of course! Many masculine-looking people have both traditionally male and female hobbies. You can still enjoy the Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty and Choco Cat. It won't affect whether or not you look like a female.

    Nico
    Top Answerer
Try to wear clothing that leans more on the masculine side, but any gender would wear, such as sweaters, trench coats, khakis with belts, etc. I would also suggest looking on websites like Pinterest for light/dark academia outfit ideas for any gender.

    Nico

There are various haircuts you could get based on how short you've cut your hair. Some hairstyles I would suggest are a pompadour, pixie cut, or a sideswept haircut. Try looking online for more ideas.

Hair tinsel or colored hair extensions could be a loophole in the rules. Check with your school. You can also try dyeing your hair a natural color such as brown or blonde.
  • Question
I still haven't officially come out as nonbinary to my parents (I'm AFAB) and I'm too scared to ask to get more loose-fitting clothing because I've never had interest in it until now.
    WikiHowCollaborator
    WikiHowCollaborator
    Community Answer
If you want to get loose-fitting clothes, get some oversized hoodies. If your parents are skeptical, just say that because the weather is getting colder you would like some war, but comfortable clothes. This works for me, and besides, over-sized clothes are a trend now!
  • Question
My parents are overprotective, and I've tried some techniques mentioned above, however my mum doesn't approve, she says I will look like a little boy (and that was kind of the aim).
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Try saying something like, "This is how I want to look, and I would greatly appreciate it if you supported me." Remind them that the way a person dresses, wears their hair, etc. is a personal choice based on personal style, and that you're just trying to express yourself. You can also try to ease them in with some more subtle changes at first, and then when they're used to those things, move on to bigger changes.
  • Question
My family shuts me down every time I say I want to cut my hair short. They won't listen and they say I can dress how I want when they allow me to move out. I'm non-binary but I can't come out or be me.
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Try cutting your hair yourself. You can claim that you got gum stuck in your hair and then tried cutting it out yourself. If you messed your hair up enough, your parents will probably take you to get it cut into a better style that you want. Try opting for "pixie cuts" and claiming that plenty of women wear their hair short.
  • Question
I'm born male, 6'5 and am naturally masculine to the extreme. What's the best place to start for someone like me?
    Guccigang1
    Guccigang1
    Community Answer
You could start by plucking and shaping your eyebrows, and shaving facial hair. You could experiment with makeup and try and find what works best for you. Try to shop at unisex stores or wear half traditionally male clothes and half female.
  • Question
I see a lot of people asking how to deal with overprotective or parents that disagree with this, but what if "I want this, please support me" didn't or won't work?
    Izak33
    Izak33
    Community Answer
If your parents won't support you at some point you have to realize that it's not your job to change your mind. You have to do what is best for you love. Of course, not having the support of your parents can feel awful but you have to realize that you do not need their support to survive. If you just do you despite whatever your parents feel, they may come around. They may realize it's inevitable.
