You need to prepare the wood before you begin painting. Start by sanding the wood and then putting two layers of shellac on the piece to be safe. You can buy prepared shellac from the hardware store or prepare it yourself. You can also use acrylic gesso. And once the acrylic paint is dry, you should finish with varnish.

Varnishing your painting is a good idea. The varnish will help protect your painting from dust, yellowing, and sun damage. It also adds a nice sheen that can help the colors look more radiant. Make sure the paint is completely dry before you add the varnish.

Make sure you do it when it isn’t going to rain soon because that could ruin your art! Choose a time frame where it isn't going to rain for a while. Sketch your design, paint the design, and let it dry for the rest of the day or overnight. Find a sealant, preferably a spray sealant, and add multiple coats with it drying completely in between coats.

If I paint on MDF 3/4, can I use it after cleaning with rustoleum primer, 2 coats clean and sand in between and start my acrylic painting on top and seal with varnish? Will it hold up and not flake or make a mess?

Yes, it might work, the primer adds grip to the surfaces, so that the paint holds better. The most important part is the sealing. MDF is very susceptible to humidity, so as long as it is sealed with a waterproof varnish, it should last quite a long time.

The transfer should be applied first followed by the wax. You have deduced the correct order of the process. Make sure that the initial surface is lightly sanded first to allow the transfer to attach firmly so that it will not bubble up and flake off later.
