A fadeaway is a jump shot in the sport of basketball in which a player throws the ball towards the net while jumping backwards away from the basket. This type of shot is challenging to block because it creates space between the defender and the shooter. The shot is more difficult than a regular jump shot to execute because it requires more strength and accuracy. Follow these steps to learn how to shoot a fadeaway.

  1. It doesn't matter which shoulder is closest to the basket. By standing sideways to the basket, you will be able to prevent defenders from stealing the ball.
  2. This tactic will fool your defender into thinking you are going to make a drive toward the basket.

  3. Take a full step backwards with your foot that is the closest to the basket. While you are taking a step backward, turn your shoulders square to the basket. You should turn and step backwards in a single fluid motion.
  4. With both feet, quickly jump into the air, angling your jump so you are jumping away from the basket.
  5. Do this while jumping in the air in preparation to shoot the basketball towards the net.
  6. With the momentum you gain from jumping in the air and raising the basketball, shoot the basketball towards the basketball goal.
    • Snap your wrist towards the basket when shooting the basketball to help propel the ball.

If you are short and guarded by a taller player, first try to fade away and see if the player goes to attempt your shot, then pump fake and go around him (keep your pivot foot down at all times the ref may call travel).

Tips

  • Since a fadeaway involves you jumping further away from the basket, you will have to increase your shooting power more than you would in a regular jump shot.
  • When protecting the ball from defenders before attempting your fadeaway shot, hold the ball chest level. Holding the ball closer to the ground will make it easier for the defender to steal the ball from you.
  • Since shots are more easily made with a regular jump shop, only use the fadeaway when under heavy defensive pressure.

Warnings

  • When stepping backward to make a fadeaway shot, make sure you don't take more than one step or you will be called for a traveling violation.
  • When you shoot a fadeaway, you won't be able to rebound your own shot. Jumping away from the basket when shooting a fadeaway will bring your momentum away from the basket and eliminate any chances of competing for the rebound.
