Crash Course on Warhammer 40k Space Marine Chapters

In the world of Warhammer 40k, the mighty Imperium of Man is upheld and defended by chapters of supersoldier Space Marines. These chapters each come from one of the original Legions who fought for the Emperor during the divisive Horus Heresy. Each chapter is made up of exactly 1,000 Space Marines, and each chapter has its own history, culture, and philosophy.

Here’s a rundown of the founding chapters:

Dark Angels
The Dark Angels navigate the void on a ship constructed from their own shattered planet after an internal conflict devastated their ranks. Now, they’re fractured, and the loyalists hunt down the traitors in hopes of redeeming their chapter.

White Scars
The White Scars are a popular chapter strong in numbers who played a key loyalist role in the Horus Heresy. Now, they’re fast, frenetic, and fierce fighters, favoring speed and tactical strikes using their numerous ranks to overwhelm and confound their enemies.

Space Wolves
The Space Wolves are a fierce, fearsome, and feared chapter. Like their name, they’re animalistic and driven by instinct, fighting in packs and using their ruthless brutality to triumph over their foes.

Imperial Fists
The Imperial Fists are the safeguard of Terra, or Earth. They’re a defensive chapter who prefers to wait for threats to come to them rather than striking first. They’re reliable and admired, and very little gets through them.

Blood Angels
The Blood Angels are a noble class descended from a primarch betrayed. They’re heroic and chivalrous, but a curse runs through their ranks that originates from the betrayal in their genes. Now, the curse arises in battle and at inopportune times, but also makes them terrifying warriors.

Iron Hands
The Iron Hands have a great fondness for technology and innovation. They embrace new tech and use it to make up for their more human shortcomings. They use war machines and heavy weapons to gain the upper hand in battle.

Ultramarines
The Ultramarines are the mascot chapter of Warhammer 40k. They’re born of the largest legion, and even now hold tremendous power, working to restore the Imperium to its former glory.

Salamanders
The Salamanders are a resilient chapter that makes their home on an inhospitable volcano planet. They have an unusual regard for protecting human citizens, and often advocate for citizen welfare in combat.

Raven Guard
The Raven Guard is a cunning, stealthy chapter of efficient, black-haired killers. They narrowly survived an extermination, and now operate as mysterious and cunning predators.
