Fun Facts About the United States
As the third biggest country in the entire world, the United States of America has a whopping total of 50 states (not including its capital). Whether you hail from the USA or another country, here are a few fun facts you might not know about the US:
-
There are 5 US territories. US territories are places beyond the standard American borders that still qualify as American soil should you visit them. They include Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
-
There are 3 freely associated states. Freely associated states exist as their own separate nations, but they’ve signed a Compact of Free Association agreement with America. According to the US government, these states (through the previously mentioned Compact) “receive US economic assistance and grant the United States permission to operate military bases on their soil and make decisions that affect mutual security." The freely associated states include the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Micronesia.[1]
-
Alaska is the largest US state. Alaska is far and away the largest US state, taking up around 665,384 square miles (1,723,337 km²). Texas is the largest continental US state, taking up 268,596 square miles (695,662 km²).
-
Rhode Island is the smallest US state. Rhode Island takes up only 1,545 square miles (4,001 km²). Delaware is the second-smallest state at 2,489 square miles (6,446 km²).
- California is the most populated state. California holds the crown with over 39 million residents. Texas comes in second place with over 30 million residents.
-
Wyoming is the least populated state. Despite being the 10th-largest state, Wyoming boasts a population of less than 600,000 residents. Vermont comes in as the second-least-populated state with a little under 650,000 residents.
-
New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago are the most populous cities. It’s no surprise that NYC, LA, and Chicago all make it on the podium of super-populated cities. Phoenix, however, takes the crown as the biggest city that also doubles as a state capital.
- Four of America’s most populous cities are in Texas. According to 2022 data, Houston (#4), San Antonio (#7), Dallas (#9), and Austin (#10) all make the top 10 list.
