If you’ve been rocking a fringe and have had it up to here with your bangs coming apart all the time, you’re in luck! Normally, bangs come apart because they're too soft and lack texture, but there are several easy tricks you can use to get your bangs to stay in line. We have all the expert-backed solutions you need below. If you find yourself with split bangs later in the day, try a quick fix to put them back together again.
Steps
-
Style your bangs with a round brush to give them extra volume.[1] After washing your hair, use a round brush to style and dry your bangs at the same time. Wind your bangs around the brush and move the blow dryer back and forth over your bangs as you twirl the brush. Keep doing this until your bangs are dry. This will help to give your bangs extra volume and keep them together.[2]
- Make sure to keep the blow dryer moving to prevent the heat from damaging your hair. You may also want to use the dryer on low heat to minimize heat damage.
- Heat protectant products can also help to minimize heat damage on your bangs, but use these products sparingly as they can be oily and this will lead to bang separation.
-
Try dry shampoo to eliminate oil between washes. If you don’t have a chance to shower or if you’d rather not shampoo your bangs every day, you can also use dry shampoo to suck up the excess oil. Spray the dry shampoo to the roots of your bangs (or all over your roots if desired) and work it in with your fingers. Then, brush or comb your hair to distribute the dry shampoo and style your hair as usual.[3]Advertisement
-
Shampoo your fringe daily to reduce oil buildup. Oil will make your bangs more likely to come apart, so even if you don’t shampoo your hair every day, you may want to start shampooing your bangs every day. Wet your bangs and add a few drops of shampoo to them, then work it in and rinse it out. Skip the conditioner for your bangs as well since this will also weigh them down.[4]
- Try choosing a frizz-control shampoo if your hair tends to frizz when it separates.
-
Use anti-humidity hairspray to hold bangs together. After you finish styling your bangs with the round brush, spritz them with anti-humidity hairspray.[5] Hold the hairspray about 8–12 in (20–30 cm) from your bangs and spray them all over. This will help to prevent frizz and separation from humidity.[6]
- Avoid using gel, mousse, or pomades on your bangs as these are more likely to create clumps of hair that will stick together.
Tip: If you use anti-frizz serum, apply it to your bangs last and only use a very small amount at the ends. Anti-frizz serum is oily and this can lead to bang separation if you use too much.[7]
-
Comb your bangs as needed throughout the day to keep them together. Even with special washing and styling strategies, your bangs may separate as you go about your day and this is normal. To combat this, keep a comb with you and do regular touchups. Comb through your bangs to bring them all back in line as needed.[8]
- You could also keep a travel-sized dry shampoo and hairspray in your purse in case you get sweaty or your bangs get wet. Just make sure to wait until your bangs are dry again to apply these products and style them.
-
Wash your face before styling your bangs. Oils on your forehead can cause your bangs to separate, so always wash your face before you style your bangs. Wash your face well, especially your forehead. Also, use moisturizer and foundation sparingly on your forehead to reduce the amount of oil buildup.[9]
- If you have oily skin, make sure that you’re using an oil-free moisturizer.
- Carry a packet of facial cleansing cloths with you in case you need to wash your face on the go.
-
Dab your forehead with oil-blotting paper to reduce excess oil. As you go through your day, keep excess oil off of your forehead by blotting your skin with a piece of oil-absorbing paper. Keep these in your purse or pocket for a convenient way to soak up excess face oil on the go. This can help to prevent the oil from getting on your bangs and causing them to separate.[10]
- If you don’t have any oil-absorbing paper, a napkin, paper towel, or piece of tissue paper will also work fine to remove excess oil from your face.
-
Get regular trims to prevent your bangs from losing their shape. Bangs grow at the same rate as the rest of your hair, but since your bangs are usually shorter than the rest of your hair, you will require more frequent bang trims to keep them looking their best. Get your hair cut every 6 to 8 weeks to prevent split ends, but aim to get your bangs trimmed at least every 4 weeks.[11]
Tip: Ask your hair stylist if they provide free bang trims between haircuts. Many salons do this for their regular clients.[12]
-
Dampen your bangs and blow dry them if they’re extra unruly. If your bangs refuse to stay together, you might need to wet them and re-style them. You can use a wet washcloth, moist cotton ball, or spray bottle of water to dampen your bangs. Then, blow dry and style them as you normally would to get them back into place.[13]
- If you’re unable to blow dry your hair, such as if you’re at school or work, you could try using the hand dryer to dry your bangs instead. Just make sure to brush them under or at least comb them as they dry to prevent them from looking unruly.

Tips
-
Keep in mind that separated bangs can still look fashionable, so don’t worry if they come apart now and then. Your bangs will still look good even if there are a few spaces in between the hairs.[14]Thanks
Warnings
- While it can be tempting to trim your own bangs, it’s best to go to a salon for touch-ups. Even if you’ve cut your bangs before, there’s always the chance that you’ll cut too much or make them uneven and this can be very frustrating until the bangs grow out again.[15]Thanks

About This Article
If your bangs keep separating during the day, there are a few ways to help keep them together. Try spraying a little dry shampoo or hairspray on them and rubbing it in with your fingers. This helps to remove excess oil from your bangs, which can cause them to separate. You should also keep a comb in your bag and comb through your bangs a few times throughout the day to keep them in check. If they still separate easily, try dampening your bangs and re-styling them.
