Categories of Ghosts

If you’re a paranormal enthusiast, or if you’ve played games like Phasmophobia or Demonologist, you know that ghosts aren’t all the same. There are friendly ghosts and unfriendly ghosts, ghosts that move and ghosts that stay put, ghosts that talk and ghosts that prefer to throw stuff around. Ask any paranormal investigator, and they’ll tell you that ghosts are just as diverse as people—probably because they used to be people!

Here are some of the most common types of ghost:

Interactive Personality
These are also called “shades,” and are said to be the most common kind of ghost. They’re the spirits of people who’ve died but who remain in this world. They’re the most common because, as the name implies, they like to interact with the living. Experts say that shades are prone to talking, touching, and manifesting as visible beings.

Poltergeist
Poltergeists are spirits that can only interact with the world through touch. They tend to move physical objects or throw them across the room in order to get their message across. That doesn’t mean they’re evil; most of the time, they’re just misunderstood.

Banshee
Banshees are the loudest kind of ghost by far. Originating in Irish folklore, they’re often depicted as spirits in the form of women who cry blood-curdling screams. It’s said that when a banshee screams, they’re warning us of an incoming tragedy, like the death of a loved one.

Wraith
Wraiths are the most mobile ghosts. It’s said that they can freely move between the worlds of the living and the dead, and this also makes them super speedy and agile. Wraiths often fly through the air, speed down halls, or race along dark and eerie country roads.

Jinn
Jinn are spirits from Arab mythology. They’re similar to ghosts, but are actually a separate kind of entity. They’re said to be able to shapeshift into any kind of living thing, and don’t love to interact with people. When they do, though, they’re often tricksters.

Demon
Demons are another spirit that’s separate from ghosts, but still related. Usually, they’re said to be evil entities who only want to cause havoc and entertain themselves. They do this by possessing humans, animals, or objects, and by warping the world around them.

And here are some minor ghost subtypes:

Orbs
Orbs are small circles of light that often appear in photographs. Pro ghost hunters say that they’re kind of like baby ghosts—spirits that are new to the world of the dead, and get around easier by forming themselves into balls before they manifest into other shapes or forms.

Funnels
Funnel ghosts are said to be old residents returning to their homes to visit. They’re closely associated with cold spots, or places where the temperature dips. Ghost hunters believe that funnel ghosts take the form of whirlwinds or spirals of faint light.

Ectoplasms
Ectoplasms or “mists” are perhaps the most mysterious kind of ghost. Like the name suggests, they take the form of clouds of mist or fog that seems to move intentionally, sometimes going in circles and sometimes drifting away.
