Tarot, Major Arcana, & Readings

Major Arcana: In a classic tarot deck, 22 of 78 cards form the Major Arcana.[1] These are meant to represent major life events—if you draw a card from this set, you’re dealing with big changes or experiences. They’re included below, along with related themes:

  • 0—The Fool: New beginnings, innocence, adventure, youthfulness.
  • 1—The Magician: Resourcefulness, confidence, capability, self-belief.
  • 2—The High Priestess: Intuitiveness, self-awareness, inner voice.
  • 3—The Empress: Compassion, beauty, love, inter-connectedness, peace.
  • 4—The Emperor: Leadership, power, structure, control.
  • 5—The Hierophant: Divine messages, lessons, conformity, guidance.
  • 6—The Lovers: Romance, devotion, decisions, effort.
  • 7—The Chariot: Drive, determination, personal victories.
  • 8—Strength: Mental and emotional resilience and manageability.
  • 9—The Hermit: Solitude, self-discovery, knowledge, inner voice.
  • 10—Wheel of Fortune: Impermanence, ups and downs, present moment, strokes of luck.
  • 11—Justice: Karma, deserving, kindness, punishment.
  • 12—The Hanged Man: Big decisions, limbo, waiting, letting go.
  • 13—Death: Cycles, endings & beginnings, opening new doors.
  • 14—Temperance: Peace, patience, moderation, contentedness.
  • 15—The Devil: Powerlessness, closed doors, fear, addiction.
  • 16—The Tower: Destruction, falling apart, weak foundations, clearing paths.
  • 17—The Star: Hope, healing, faith, optimism, renewal.
  • 18—The Moon: Subconscious, anxieties, deep-seated feelings, the unknown.
  • 19—The Sun: Joy, vitality, moving on the correct life path, roads opening.
  • 20—Judgment: Self-reflection, self-growth, forming the ideal self, choices.
  • 21—The World: Success, attainment, the finish line, being right where you’re meant to be.

Minor Arcana: The deck’s remaining 57 cards make up the minor arcana. While the major arcana predicts big life themes, the minor arcana deals in smaller, day-to-day events. These cards might be able to predict the next week of your life, but not the next 6 months.

Suits: The minor arcana is split into 4 suits, and each suit involves a specific theme. “Pentacles” deal with the material world, like career success and finances. “Wands” point to the spiritual realm and might instruct on personal fulfillment, dreams, ideas, or growth and actions. Then, there are “Cups;” this suit indicates emotional truth, so it might offer insight into how you (or others) are truly feeling. Finally, the minor arcana contains “Swords.” This suit deals with conflict and challenges and thoughts, so loss, heartbreak, or struggle might be on the table.

Reading Tarot Cards: To get a reading, shuffle your deck well. Then, choose a spread that feels meaningful to you—you might just draw one card to address a single question, or you might draw three and separate into past, present, and future. Speak your question out loud, then lay your card or cards in front of you. Now, do your best to apply the drawn cards’ themes and lessons to the question at hand. For instance:

Say you’re looking for answers in your love life. You’ve been struggling with insecurity in your relationship, and you don’t know whether to listen to your inner voice and cut ties, or stay in it for the long haul. Here’s how we might interpret a few different potential draws:

01—Magician: You already have all the right tools to make a great decision. You’re empathetic and devoted, so you can improve your relationship if you put your mind to it. On the other hand, if you choose the other path, your inner-strength will shine through and you’ll bounce back quickly. The decision is yours, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll be okay either way.

13—Death: It’s time to let go. Your relationship is keeping you from new, exciting possibilities in love and in life. By desperately holding on to a stressful romance, you’re putting off your own destiny. Cut cords and go find the correct path, because it’s out there waiting for you.

19—The Sun: You’re exactly where you’re meant to be already. Some anxiety is expected, and all romances ebb and flow. But stick it out in this relationship, and joyful, exciting memories are sure to follow. You’re on the right path, don’t alter course.
