Get to Know the Straw Hat Pirates
One Piece is one of the longest-running manga and anime series still releasing today, and that means that there have been loads of characters to meet, love, and say sayonara to. Rumor has it that the series is gearing up for its big finale, but who knows how much longer we’ll be able to sail the high seas with Luffy and his misfit crew?
Speaking of, why don’t we get to know the main cast and crew of the Going Merry/Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hat Pirates!
Monkey D. Luffy
Luffy is the unlikely captain of the Straw Hats. When he’s not allowed to follow his dream of joining a pirate crew, he gets back at them by eating their greatest treasure, a magical Gum-Gum Fruit that turns his body to rubber. Now, he uses his power to search for the One Piece, the greatest pirate treasure in the world, in hopes of becoming the Pirate King.
Roronoa Zoro
Zoro is a fierce swordsman with the unique ability to use 3 swords at once by sticking one between his teeth. He swore to his childhood rival that he'd defeat the intimidating Mihawk and take his title as the greatest swordsman to ever live. Eventually, he joins the Straw Hats after Luffy rescues him from prison, and Zoro continues to stick his neck out for his friends, despite his individual spirit.
Nami
Nami’s entire family and village were killed by the cruel pirate Arlong. She joined Arlong’s crew as she plotted her revenge, and in doing so, became one of the finest cartographers and map makers in the world, as well as an ace burglar and pickpocket. When Luffy shows up and liberates her island she joins up with his crew and serves as their main navigator.
Usopp
Usopp is a skilled inventor and creator, but has a habit of lying. He can’t help himself, and he often gets himself into trouble this way. After he joins the Straw Hats, he develops an arsenal of unique weapons and becomes an expert slingshot marksman, which is a skill he eventually uses to free Nico Robin.
Sanji
Sanjo is a prince who escaped a floating ship kingdom his father ruled. His life is saved by the pirate Zeff, and together Sanji and Zeff share a dream of seeing the Grand Blue, the place where all the seas meet and there’s an abundance of fish. In the meantime, Sanji learns to become an expert chef, and uses his feet alone to fight in order to preserve his hands, which he needs to cook for the Straw Hats.
Tony Tony Chopper
Chopper is a small reindeer with the ability to transform into many different shapes, most notably a human-reindeer hybrid. He’s an alchemist who uses his talents to create fantastical potions. Before joining the Straw Hats, he dreamed of making a potion that’d turn snow into cherry blossoms. His mentor died while he was developing the potion, but it was eventually perfected.
Nico Robin
Nico Robin was one of the world’s youngest archaeologists at just 8 years old. She grew up in Ohara, which has the world’s largest library, and ate a Paramecia-type fruit, which allows her to duplicate parts of her body. While trying to discover the lost history of the Void Century, she’s taken prisoner by the World Government, which is when the Straw Hats intervene and set her free.
Franky
Franky is the apprentice of the master shipmaker Tom, who also holds the blueprints for a devastating weapon. After Franky makes a terrible mistake, Tom is taken captive by the World Government, and in trying to rescue Tom, Franky loses multiple limbs, which he rebuilds from scrap metal. Now, he’s a cola-fueled cyborg and the Straw Hat’s shipwright.
Brook
Brook is a long-time pirate and master musician. His body gets obliterated, but then resurrected with the power of the Revive-Revive Fruit. Only now, Brooks is just a skeleton! He remains a master musician who can play any instrument, and his skeleton body lets him jump to great heights and run across water.
Jinbei
Jinbei is a whale-shark fishman who can talk to fish and manipulate water. He rose through the ranks of a pirate crew and became captain, but was forced to disband his crew after the World Government intervened. The World Government imprisons him, after which he’s freed by the Straw Hats, who also help him prevent a coup. He pledged his loyalty to another crew, but eventually finds a way to cut ties and join the Straw Hats permanently.
