Famous People Who’ve Played Famous People

The biopic is a time-honored movie genre where famous actors get to take a crack at playing other famous people, so that the big names in our culture get their flowers, and hopefully the actors playing them get an Oscar or two. Some biopics are roaring successes, while others might have been better off left to the history books. Let’s take a look at some famous people who’ve played other famous people:

Timothée Chalamet is set to play music Hall of Famer and groundbreaker Bob Dylan. As of writing, the movie’s not out yet, so we’ll have to see how it goes, but Chalamet’s made some interesting choices regarding Dylan’s voice.

Everyone’s favorite British comedienne Olivia Colman gave a sometimes funny but mostly serious portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix drama The Crown, and if you ask us, she’s the best part of the show.

Speaking of the British government, Meryl Streep borrowed Margaret Thatcher’s face for 2011’s The Iron Lady, but that wasn’t her only dip into biopic waters. The iconic actress has also been Julia Child, as well as suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

Tom Hanks brought us all to happy tears when he offered his sensitive and moving portrayal of everyone’s neighbor, Mister Rogers. The movie was sappy, but it worked. Hanks also played Walt Disney in the somewhat less sappy Saving Mr. Banks.

Will Smith gave a knockout performance as the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in the 2001 biopic, Ali. With his time in the ring, Smith also snagged his first Academy Award nom.

Benedict Cumberbatch has stepped into the biopic world a couple of times, first as the brilliant Alan Turing, who cracked German intelligence codes during WWII, and then as the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange.

And as long as we’re on the topic of leaks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt took on the controversial mask of whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Scorsese’s 2023 true-story noir Killers of the Flower Moon saw an ensemble cast take up a number of historical roles, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons. And let’s not forget Lily Gladstone in her breakout role.

These are just some of the more recent instances of actors playing famous people, and we haven’t covered even half of the movies that came out in the 2020s. Again, it’s a long-standing tradition for Hollywood to pay homage to the greats. What’s your favorite real-life role played by an actor?
