What makes someone unforgettable?
There are a lot of things you can do to be more memorable to others. You could do something impressive and meaningful for the world, like find a cure for cancer. Or you could dye your hair purple. Or you could stand in the middle of the street and scream. These are all very memorable actions.
It may be helpful to consider why you want to be more memorable—after all, some people are very memorable for very bad things, like dictators. Others are memorable for their celebrity, but they aren’t truly known by anyone, so being memorable isn’t really worth much (see: “Lucky” by Britney Spears).
Being truly memorable to other people—in the sense of being recognized by them—often comes down to how memorable they are to us, and that usually involves being really present when we’re around them and showing them we see them. For instance, if you go to the same cafe every day but you just order your coffee on autopilot and get out, it’s possible the barista will remember you as “the person who orders the peppermint latte even in July” or “the person with the purple hair,” but unless you’re present with them, they’re unlikely to recall your name—or even care to ask it.
So what does it mean to be present? It means to show that you’re actually engaging with your surroundings and the people in it. This doesn’t have to mean becoming besties with every stranger you meet, but making eye contact and flashing a genuine smile can go a long way towards establishing a connection, even a fleeting one, that’ll keep your memory in their mind after you’ve gone. And who knows? Maybe a quick smile and a “How’s your day?” will lead to more than just a fleeting connection, but a lifelong friendship!
