PDF download Download Article

Do you need to update your email password on your iPhone? If you recently changed your email password on another device, you'll need to update your iPhone's settings so your email can continue to sync to the Mail app. For some accounts, you may have the option to replace the existing password with the new one. In most cases, you'll need to remove and re-add the email account to update the password. Fortunately, this only takes a few seconds and won't cause you any headaches. Here's how to change your email password on an iPhone.

Quick Steps

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Mail.
  3. Tap Accounts or Mail Accounts.
  4. Tap the email you want to change.
  5. Tap Re-enter Password and enter your new password.
  6. If this isn't an option, delete and re-add the account to update the password.
  1. If you use the Mail app on your iPhone to send and receive email and have recently changed your email password on your provider's website, use this method to update your password.
    • If you haven't yet changed the password through your email provider (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, or your work email server), log into your provider's website in Safari or another mobile browser and change it there first.
    • You may see Account Error in the Mail app if you need to update your password.
  2. This is next to the white envelope icon.
    • If you're using iOS 18 or later, scroll down to the bottom and tap Apps first.

  3. You'll see one of these two options near the top of the page.
  4. You'll see a list of all added email accounts.[1]
  5. If this option is available, it will be at the top in blue. A new page will open with the official sign-in page for your email provider. Sign in with your new password to finish updating your new email password.
    • If you see a password field instead, tap it, then update your password there.
    • If neither option is available, you will need to remove your email account and re-add it to update the password. This only takes a few seconds.
  6. If there was no option to re-enter your password, tap Delete account, then Delete account again to confirm. You can then re-add the account with the updated password by tapping Add Account and following the on-screen instructions.
    • Once your account has been read, your email will be updated and begin to sync.
