If your Apple Magic Mouse runs out of battery while you’re working, then it’s time to recharge it. Luckily, you can quickly and easily charge your Mac mouse by plugging it into your computer or into the wall. Keep reading, and we’ll cover how to properly plug in your Apple Mouse and how to check its battery level.

Quick Steps for Charging an Apple Magic Mouse

Turn your mouse over and plug a Lightning cable into the port on the bottom. Connect the other end of the cable to your computer or a wall adapter. While you can’t use your mouse while it’s charging, it will have enough battery life after a couple of minutes or be fully charged in 2 hours.

  1. Flip over your Magic Mouse and look for the rectangular port near the bottom. Connect the end of a Lightning cable to the port.
    • When you purchased your Magic Mouse, it should have come with a Lightning cable. If you don't have that cable, any Lightning cable will work.
  2. Find an open USB port on your Mac or Macbook, and plug in the other end of the Lightning cable. If you don’t have an open USB port, then connect it to a USB wall adapter and plug it into a standard outlet.[1]

  1. Look on the right side of the menu bar for the Control Center icon that looks like 2 switches. Click on the Bluetooth option from the dropdown to see all of your Bluetooth devices. If your Apple mouse is connected, it will appear in the list along with its battery level.[4]
    • You can also access the Bluetooth menu by opening System Settings and clicking the Bluetooth tab on the left.
  2. Open System Settings and click on the Mouse setting in the menu on the left. If you’re using your mouse or have it plugged into your Mac, the battery level will appear in the top left corner of the window.[5]
    • Your mouse will not appear in the System Settings if it is plugged into a wall charger.
    • If you do not see a lightning bolt icon on the battery when your mouse is plugged in, then it’s not charging properly. Try unplugging it and replugging it back in to see if it starts charging again. If not, try using a different cord or USB port.
