Rock Smash is a HM Move for all of the Pokémon games. Rock Smash enables you to break rocks to collect items, fight Pokémon, or access hidden areas. When used in battle, Rock Smash can lower your opponent's defense stat. To find Rock Smash in Pokémon Ruby, you'll need to visit Mauville city.

  1. Enter the city via Route 110. Mauville City is a multi-layered city with a bike shop, gym, slot machines, and more.
  2. Head north from Route 110, to the center of town. The Pokémart is to your right. Walk past the mart and enter the gray house.
    • You can pick up an X Speed along the way. Check behind the map near the bike racks on the south side of the city.[1]

  3. He is scientist who calls himself "Rock Smash Dude." He will give you HM Rock Smash.

Using Rock Smash Outside of Battle

  1. He is blocking the entrance to the gym and you must battle him to enter. Luckily, Wally is rather weak, with only one Level 16 Pokèmon.[2]
    • Once you beat Wally, he will run away and allow you to access the gym.
  2. This is an electric gym, so you will need some anti-electric Pokèmon to succeed.[3]
    • Watson is hidden behind electrified walls, but you can easily move these out of your way by stepping on the lightening bolts. The walls will reposition so you can walk through.[4]
  3. Watson will award you with the Dynamo Badge and TM - 34 Shock Wave once he is defeated. The badge will allow you to use Rock Smash outside of battle, so you can access areas that are blocked by rocks.

  1. The gym is located on the upper left side of the city, near Route 111. Wally and his uncle will be standing outside.[5]
  2. The youngster will challenge you to a short, easy Pokèmon battle against Ralts.[6]
  3. Once you defeat Wally, he will decide to return to Verdanturf. His uncle will reward you with HM06 Rock Smash, as you have been a positive influence on his nephew.[7]
