Top Tunes Through the Decades
For this quiz, we hand-picked songs from a variety of decades, genres, and general vibes in order to test your knowledge of the chart-toppers. But not every hit, or hitmaker, made the list (believe us, we’d put them all in here if we could). So who are those top hitmakers? According to Billboard, here are the most popular artists of each of the past 10 years:
- 2023 - Taylor Swift
- 2022 - Bad Bunny
- 2021 - Drake
- 2020 - Post Malone
- 2019 - Post Malone
- 2018 - Drake
- 2017 - Ed Sheeran
- 2016 - Adele
- 2015 - Taylor Swift
- 2014 - One Direction
That’s 7 artists for just 10 spots! Some artists have a whole lot of staying power, churning out the hits year after year. But what about artists who come and go, like a candle in the wind? Here are some of the most notable one-hit wonders, or artists who released 1 hit song that we all know and love, before they ducked back behind the curtain:
- The Norwegian pop trio A-ha changed the world with their soaring 1985 single “Take On Me,” which still challenges even the bravest of karaoke singers with its sky-high notes.
- Chumbawumba dropped their fun and furious pop-punk single “Tubthumping” in 1997, propelling these self-professed anarchists into long-lived cultural icon status.
- In 1987, Dexy’s Midnight Runners dropped “Come On Eileen.” The song climbed the charts back then, and has stuck around ever since.
- Bahamian reggae-pop group Baha Men had us all barking up the dance floor with their 2000 hip hop game changer “Who Let the Dogs Out?”
- In 1996, Los Del Rio altered proms and high school dances forever with the drop of “Macarena.” You’re probably shimmying in your seat just reading the song title, aren’t you?
- Right Said Fred had us all acting up for a hot minute in 1991 with their funky, goofy, and infectious “I’m Too Sexy.”
Of course, we could go on! So much music, so little time.
