Attraction: Types, Pheromones, & Romantic Patterns
Does everyone have a “type”? In short, yes, most people do.[1] Research shows that people seek out partners with similar personalities to their exes (I know, scary thought!). Using the Big Five personality test, researchers determined that we tend to seek out the same persona again and again—but that’s not the full story. In general, we also look for partners who are similar to us. So in short, your “type” is probably a lot like you, and your exes probably are, too.
But not all people are so quick to limit themselves. Some were less likely to seek out a specific romantic type—namely, those who scored high on extraversion (friendliness) and openness.
Attraction & Lust: Believe it or not, what happens in our brains during romantic attraction is different than that of lust, or sexual attraction. Your brain releases chemicals associated with its reward center and produces feelings of giddiness and euphoria (sound familiar?). You may also experience physical symptoms, like sweating and a pounding heart.[2]
On the other hand, lust is all about sexual gratification and fulfillment. When you experience feelings of lust, your body will release sex hormones, like estrogen and testosterone.
Pheromones: You may not realize it, but when it comes to attraction, your nose is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for you. Your crush’s pheromones, or his super subtle smells, can also contribute to your attraction to him.[3]
Physical Signs of Attraction: Flirting is a universal, human mating call. One that tells another person, “Hey I’m interested. What do you think?” Some flirting signals are intentional, while others occur subconsciously.[4] Pay close attention during your next conversation, and you might spot dead giveaways: eye contact, initiating conversation, laughing, and maintaining physical proximity.
