To keep your hair healthy and strong, wash it only every 2-3 days. Use leave-in conditioner and sprays to make your hair silky, but research the products you're using to make sure they won't dry out your hair. If you use protein treatments, do so sparingly. Otherwise, it can do more harm than good. Get a haircut at least every 3 months to prevent split ends.

  • Question
How can I keep my hair from breaking and straighten my curls?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Be sure to use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair hydrated; if you hair is too dry, it will break. When you straighten your hair, be sure to use a good heat protection spray. Use a lower temperature, if possible, and wait until the hair has cooled before you straighten that part of hair again. Try to avoid straightening when possible, however, as it is very damaging to hair, even with the heat protection spray.

First, you can do some non-heat curls by braiding slightly damp hair and sleeping overnight in them. The next day, to hold the curls, spray your hair with aerosol hairspray.

  • Question
What if my mom buys me shampoo and conditioner mixed together?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
You can ask her to buy you separate shampoo and conditioner because that generally works better. The shampoo washes dirt, oil, and product buildup out of your hair, then the conditioner deposits nourishing ingredients on your hair. When they're mixed, they can kind of get in the way of each other's jobs.
  • Question
What methods are useful for people with oily scalps?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Don't wash your hair a lot, it puts even more oil into your scalp. Try only washing your hair every four days, and only condition the ends of your hair. Also: Pay close attention to what products you use! A lot of hair gel makes your hair very greasy, so dry shampoo is your best bet. Curling irons can be bad for your hair, but luckily there are a ton of heat-free curl tutorials online.
  • Question
How can I make my hair soft and curly if its too strong?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
When washing your hair, try leaving in conditioner for 2/3 minutes to make it softer. Also, for curly hair you can use a curling iron/curling wand and use hairspray to secure. If you would like to try a non-heat method of curling your hair their are many great tutorials on YouTube.
  • Question
I straightened my hair, but it turns wavy. How do I keep it straight?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Wash your hair, and when drying, rub your hair downward with a very soft, gentle towel or t-shirt. While it's damp, apply a light amount of hair gel and VERY GENTLY brush your hair, brushing the bottom first and working your way up. Take a hair dryer and a round brush, and gently brush your hair (a small section at a time) while drying it. If your hair is just slightly wavy, you might not even need a straightener anymore, but if your hair is very wavy or curly you probably will. When your hair is FULLY dry, then use your flat iron.

Shower every day, and use conditioner after you dry your hair with a towel. Try braiding your hair before you go to bed so that it doesn't tangle up in your sleep, just make sure you brush your hair up again in the morning, and add some natural oil for shiny and soft hair.

  • Question
How often should I brush my hair if I have curly hair?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Brushing your hair before a shower will make it tangle-free. You can comb it when wet (with a wide-toothed comb), but be very careful, as it is fragile. Do not brush your hair when it is dry, unless you don’t mind frizz. Finger-combing is best, but a wide-toothed comb works, too. Put in some oil or anti-frizz cream and go about your day.
