All About Spiritual Gifts
What are spiritual gifts?
Spiritual gifts are divine gifts given to you by the Holy Spirit once you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. These gifts are meant to help you better serve the Church and spread Christ’s love into the world around you. All believers are blessed with at least 1 gift, and some believers may even have multiple.
How do you get a spiritual gift?
You get a spiritual gift when you become a Christian by accepting Jesus Christ to be your personal Lord and Savior—besides this, there is nothing that needs to be “done.” God chooses the gift that you’ll receive so that you can be an active and supportive member of your Church community.
How do you know what your spiritual gift is?
- Ask your fellow friends and believers. Trusted friends and believers might be able to see aspects of your skills and strengths that aren’t quite as apparent to you personally.
- Test what you think your spiritual gift might be. If you suspect that your spiritual gift falls in a certain category (like encouragement or teaching), try participating in activities that utilize these spiritual gifts. For instance, if you suspect that your spiritual gift is leadership, you could try volunteering for a leadership position in your church and see how it makes you feel.
-
Pray for guidance from God. God is the One who knows what your spiritual gift is—after all, He’s the one who gave it to you in the first place! Ask for His help and validation in understanding and embracing what your spiritual gifts truly are.
Types of Spiritual Gifts
- Prophecy: The gift of prophecy revolves around recognizing the truth within Scripture, listening to God carefully, and applying His wisdom in real-life situations. People with the gift of prophecy can identify deceitful and false beliefs and caution other believers about them.
- Serving: The gift of serving revolves around offering practical, behind-the-scenes assistance to your church community. People with the gift of serving are comfortable lending a helping hand with a selfless attitude.
- Teaching: The gift of teaching revolves around educating fellow believers about the Word of God. People with the gift of teaching are good at adding new insights and perspectives to their lessons, which helps their students gain a more profound understanding.
- Encouragement: Also known as exhortation, the gift of encouragement revolves around offering support to another believer’s faith journey. People with the gift of encouragement are good at reaching out and connecting with Christians who are going through a tough time or challenge.
- Giving: The gift of giving revolves around generously giving your money and resources to help the church and those in need. People with the gift of giving view their money as an opportunity to give rather than as a sign of wealth.
- Leadership: The gift of leadership revolves around providing a guiding hand in their spiritual community. People with the gift of leadership understand that they are ultimately servants to Christ and are ultimately fulfilling His calling.
-
Mercy: The gift of mercy revolves around viewing others with compassion and going the extra mile to offer help and support. People with the gift of mercy understand that all believers rely on Christ’s mercy, and that same mercy should be extended to those who need it.
