Fun Facts About Adventure Time
1. Adventure Time’s origins
Before it was a TV show, Adventure Time was an animated short! Series creator Pendleton Ward also created the short (also called Adventure Time), intended for Nickelodeon’s Random! Cartoons segment. However, the short was leaked and went viral, and an Adventure Time show was in the works not long after.
2. Nickelodeon vs. Cartoon Network
Despite its viral success, Nickelodeon actually rejected the Adventure Time series—twice! Luckily, it found a home at Cartoon Network, where Ward developed it into the show you know and love.
3. Bubblegum and Marceline
Originally, Cartoon Network didn’t want to include Princess Bubblegum or Marceline in the show because they were concerned about tailoring it toward young women. However, the naysayers were overruled and the two fan-favorite characters became Adventure Time staples.
4. Bubblegum and Marceline, continued
At the end of the show (spoiler alert), Marceline and Bubblegum become a couple once again, sharing a kiss that almost didn’t make it into the show! Storyboard artist Hanna K. Nyströmthe is responsible for adding the kiss to their scene, delighting many fans of the show.
5. Finn and Jake’s cameo
Futurama is definitely a more adult series—but that didn’t stop it from having a brief crossover with Adventure Time! Finn and Jake both appear in the 2013 Futurama episode “Leela and the Genestalk,” with actor John DiMaggio voicing both Bender (a main Futurama character) and Jake.
6. Bueno the Bear
Finn’s character design seems inspired by one of Ward’s early comic characters, Bueno the Bear. The two share a strong resemblance (and beatboxing skills).
7. Lumpy Space Princess’s voice
Show creator Pendleton Ward actually voices the Lumpy Space Princess, giving her a nasal, dramatic-sounding voice to make her into a parody of a valley girl.
8. Naming Princess Bubblegum
Originally, Ward planned Bubblegum’s name to be Bettie (after his mother). However, she was eventually named Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum instead—and she’s also had nicknames over the course of the show ranging from PB to Peebles, P-Bubs, Bon-Bon, and Prubs.
