Extend or shorten the life of a temporary FB profile pic
PDF download Download Article

Facebook’s temporary profile picture feature is a great way to express your current thoughts or feelings. If you want to shorten or extend the amount of time that temporary picture is up, it's quite simple! This wikiHow article will teach you how to change the date and time when your temporary Facebook profile picture is set to expire. As of now, you can only edit the end time on the Facebook website, not in the app.

Quick Steps

  1. Open your Facebook profile in a browser (not the mobile app).
  2. Click your temporary profile picture.
  3. Click Change end time.
  4. Select a new expiration time and date.
  1. Go to https://www.facebook.com and click your profile picture at the top of the menu on the left side of your feed. This will take you to your profile.
    • It's not possible to change your temporary profile photo's expiration date in the Facebook mobile app, so you'll have to use a web browser.
    • In order for this to work, you will first need to set a temporary profile picture in the mobile app. Go to your profile, tap your profile picture, and select Choose profile picture. Select a picture and tap Make Temporary, then choose from either 1 hour or 1 day for the expiration time.
  2. Find your profile picture at the top left side of your profile. Click directly on the picture, not on the camera icon at the bottom of the picture. A menu of options will pop up.

  3. This will be the third option in the pop-up menu that appears above your profile picture.
    • To immediately switch back to your previous profile picture or make your temporary picture permanent, choose Switch to previous picture now or Keep as permanent picture from the pop-up menu instead.
    • If you don't see these options, try refreshing the page. Double-check that you've set a temporary profile picture in the mobile app.
  4. You can change the date and time by clicking in each box and typing the new value or selecting an option from each dropdown menu that appears.
  5. You have now successfully changed when your temporary profile picture will expire!

Tips

  • When first setting a temporary profile picture, if you use the Facebook app, you have the option to stop your temporary picture from showing up in people’s News Feeds.
  • While Facebook’s help pages still state that it is possible to update your temporary profile picture’s expiration date in the app, this information seems to be outdated. It’s possible that this feature will become available again in the future.
