Are there any home remedies for eye discharge in dogs? My 6-year-old retriever is getting this kind of greenish gunk coming out of her eye. It doesn’t seem to bother her at all, she isn’t pawing at it or anything, but I’m also kind of worried it might turn into an infection. I don’t know, what should I do for her? I’ve been wiping the discharge away whenever I see it but it keeps coming back.

You should still see a vet ASAP even if it doesn’t seem to be bothering your dog. Eye issues require medical care, although the severity of the issue depends on what’s wrong with your dog’s eye. So, if it's like an ulcer or something that has irritated the eye, you're going to see things like discharge from the eye, you're going to see squinting, you might see some redness. With some of the other ocular disorders, your dog could go blind if the problem goes untreated. There may be some at-home meds or remedies you can use, but you must have your dog checked out by a vet first.

You can try a sterile saline eye wash solution to clean the area once or twice a day and also make some kind of cone to keep your dog from pawing at it. I know you said she isn't pawing yet but it's better to be safe. Eye problems can get really serious so I'd recommend just using these tips for while you're waiting to have a vet appointment!

Maybe a clean cloth soaked in chamomile tea as a warm compress on your dog's closed eyes might help soothe it but I don't think it's worth trying to get home remedies to work when it comes to your dog's eyes. Much better to take your dog to a vet.
