Fifth grade is a little early for long-term romance. However, if you fancy a girl and would like simple dates together, or just to form a really good friendship, here are some ideas to help you encourage a girl to like you enough to want to spend time with you.

Having the Right Attitude

  1. Girls don't like guys who spend all their time on getting a girl, they might suspect a "player" rather than good friendship material. Also, don't be whiny or a crybaby because girls don't want to be friends with people who just sit around and whine.
  2. Humor is an attractive trait for any person and it helps ease tension and awkwardness.[1] It can also reassure a girl that you're not being overly confident and self-inflated.
    • Being funny and smiling can make you seem more confident and approachable to a girl.
    • Reader Poll: We asked 889 wikiHow readers and 61% of them agreed that the best way to get a girl’s attention at school is by making eye contact and smiling. [Take Poll]

  3. Don't try to be sporty, geeky, hipster, etc. if you're not. On the other hand, be as much of the person you really are so that she accepts you as yourself. Always be polite though––just because you like gross humor or practical jokes doesn't mean she deserves to be on the receiving end of those. Use your common sense––making friends requires holding back on being silly, rude or just plain dumb.[2]
  4. She is no different from you in worrying about being rejected, ignored or made fun of. Reassure her that you don't intend to do any of that to her and she'll be glad to spend time with you.

Getting to Know the Girl Better

  1. It is almost impossible to get a girl to like you when you're not in her homeroom. Try someone who is in your homeroom, to make things easier.
  2. It's always best to be friends first, and after you take it slow, then you can tell her you like her, or ask her out if both of you are allowed to date or not.
    • You can show a genuine interest in the things the girl likes. Try to find out more about those things.[3]
    • Then incorporate them within a date or in your grand gesture.[4]
    • It will show her that you pay attention to what she says and prioritize it because you know it will make her happy.[5]
  3. Ask her where she lives and walk home with her. She will like the company.
  4. She will probably appreciate the fact that you would like to know her better.
  5. If her friends have a negative opinion of you, she might think it's true. It's best to get to know her friends as well. If she does not have friends, be her friend.
  6. She will grow to consider you a safe person to be around and will want to be friends with you.[6]

Adding a Little Romance (Optional)

  1. Realize that at your age, friendship is more realistic and that if you are romantic together, it most likely won't last and you might lose her friendship for good if that happens.[7]
  2. You guys have only known each other this way for less than a year. Give yourselves some time before you kiss, if at all. This part really isn't necessary and you might prefer just being good, solid friends.[8]

  • Try talking to a sibling or a parent for advice and suggestions. It might be a little embarrassing, but liking someone is normal and your siblings or parents might have some good ideas and can help reassure you.
  • If you go out to the movies with her, get there early so you can talk during the previews. This way you can still get to know each other instead of just sitting quietly through the movie.
  • Make sure to give her space. Don't stand or sit next to her all the time, because this comes off as creepy. At best, she will just not like you; at worst, you could get in trouble.
  • If you're nervous to tell her in person, try writing her a note confessing your feelings. Make sure to keep the note short and respectful.
