What can I do when my best friend is crying and making me cry and saying that she hates her life and wants to be gone?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Those are very serious things to say. If someone says that they want to hurt themselves or die, they are probably suffering from depression, and unfortunately you can't just cheer them up at that point. Depression is a disease. Talk to an adult, like your parents or your friends parents, and tell them what she's said. The best thing you can do for your friend is to get her some help.

    Community Answer
    Community Answer

  • Question
My best friend lost her mom 2 months ago. She loved her a lot. She gets sad all the time and I'm worried she's annoyed with me. How can I help her?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Support your friend and make sure she knows you care. If she prefers being alone, let her be alone, but make sure that if she needs support, she can get some from you. Be kind to your friend and go very easy on her for at least a few months, she is probably feeling very fragile and hurt, so be careful with what you say. Don't try to really force happiness on your friend, the most you should do is give her a heartfelt gift, but humor isn't too good in these situations. Just always make sure you can be there when she needs it most. Things will get easier with time.

This might sound cheesy, but put together a care package of her favorite things and give it to her with a note that says “I’m here to listen when you need it.” It helps a ton when you can just listen and give her things that you know make her happy.

I have a male best friend who is asking me to be his girlfriend. I don't want to be, but I want to keep the friendship and I want him to be happy. What should I do?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Simply tell him how you feel. I understand it may be difficult, however, if he is a real friend, he'll understand. You definitely shouldn't date someone you don't really like just because you want them to be happy. Tell him you value him as a friend, but you don't like him romantically.

People are fickle and impossible to predict. Imagine you secretly found a magical, one-and-only list of things a person should to be her go-to friend and worked hard to be all those things; even then, there's no guarantee she'd come to you. If she doesn't want to share this or that with you, then there's nothing you can do to change that. But hey, it's all right. Just be a good friend, let her know you're there for her. Enjoy this friendship, have fun together too, and enjoy all your other friendships as well, and make some more friends this year.

Maybe the best thing is not to do anything? Just let the person know you're there, keep making fun plans. You can just sit quietly together, just be there, and do or say nothing. The most important thing is to not give up. It's not your job to guarantee anyone's happiness, but you can definitely try - that's what friends do. Feel free to take a little break, say a week or two every now and then, just to keep your own sanity. Oh, and hugs, which help a lot.
  • Question
I want my best friends and I to remain close for life, so what should I do to make that happen?

If it changes, there's nothing you can do. But you can enjoy it. You see, people change. You like each other as you are now, but no one can promise they'll stay this way forever. There's also no way of knowing the ways in which you both will change; and, crucially, there's no knowing if you will like their changes, or they yours. The only thing you can really do in any relationship, friendship or love, is to keep getting to know each other over and over, every half year or so.

If your friend has three things going badly, and he wonders if everything is going badly and then only writes down those things that are going badly, then yes, the list will be of 100% things that are going badly. So help him expand his list with the things that are going well. I know of one example already: he's got you as a friend. I'm sure there's plenty more things.

Approach her and ask with a calm and gentle voice if something is wrong. Let her know that you'll always be available to talk to. Try to make the conversation as comfortable as possible. If she opens up to you, just listen and give her comfort. If the problem is schoolwork, you can help her with her homework or tell her that it will get better.

It sounds like you are unhappy in the friendship and that neither of you are feeling very friendly towards each other. If you still want to be friends with her then consider sitting down and having a conversation with her about it, or do not be afraid to find better friends who appreciate you more.

Ask him why he's upset. If he just feels unhappy, maybe surround him with happy people that won't overwhelm him. Remind him about happy things, and maybe even do actives he used to always do. If nothing works, something has happened. Do his parents know about this? Any siblings you could ask? Find out why he's upset.
