Why to Check IVs

Are you looking to get into the competitive scene in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? With the addition of high-end raid battles, having well-trained Pokémon is almost a necessity in the series' ninth generation, which means you'll need to pay attention to your Pokémon's IVs (initial values). IVs, along with EVs (effort values) are an important part of training the best Pokémon for raids and competition. In this article we'll teach you how you can unlock the IV Judge in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as well as tell you what to look for to know what your Pokémon's IVs are.

Things You Should Know

Navigate to the Pokémon you want to check in your boxes, then press the "+" button to view the IV stats screen.
Complete Scarlet/Violet's main story to unlock the ability to check IVs.
A perfect IV (31) will be represented by the statement "Best" next to the stat.

Complete the main story of Pokémon Scarlet or Violet. In order to check a Pokémon's IVs, you must complete the three story arcs of Scarlet/Violet (Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street) as well as the final main story quest (The Way Home).
- Simply continue playing the game until you get to the ending credits after defeating the Elite Four and the Champion.

Go to any Pokémon Center and talk to the nurse. After beating the main story, the nurse will let you know that you've unlocked the judge function. This replaces the IV Judge NPC in previous Pokémon games, allowing you to check your Pokémon's IVs right in your PC or party menu.^{[1]

- The Friendship Checker and Tera Type Changer are still actual NPCs in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, unlike the IV Judge.

Navigate to the Pokémon you want to check and tap +. This will bring up your Pokémon's stats, showing a grid that displays your Pokémon's individual IVs as well as their IV total.
- As in the past, the individual IVs aren't listed by number, but instead by a statement.
  - Best - 31
  - Fantastic - 30
  - Very Good - 26 to 29
  - Pretty Good - 16 to 25
  - Decent - 1 to 15
  - No Good - 0
- Total IVs are also listed by a statement instead of a number.
  - Amazing stats! is a total of 151 to 186
  - Great stats is a total of 121 to 150
  - Good stats is a total of 91 to 120
  - OK stats is a total of 0 to 90

Change your Pokémon's IVs with Hyper Training. If you get a Bottle Cap or Golden Bottle Cap, you can exchange this with an NPC in Montenevera near the Pokémon Center to Hyper Train one of your Pokémon. Hyper Training will raise one or more of your Pokémon's stats to a perfect IV.
- Your Pokémon must be level 50 in order to be Hyper Trained.
- Hyper Trained Pokémon will not pass their trained stats down when bred.^{[2]
