Isn’t it crazy how it can sometimes be so hard to know what to say? You see a girl’s picture, you love it, and you want to tell her about it—but you just can’t find the words! Have no fear. There are plenty of ways you can come up with the perfect compliment. To help you do it, we’ve put together a list of ideas and approaches you can use to flatter and impress her.

This article is based on an interview with our professional dating coach, John Keegan, founder of The Awakened Lifestyle. Check out the full interview here.

Say there’s something special about her.

  1. People love hearing that they’re photogenic! Give her a simple, kind compliment that really can’t be taken the wrong way. It’s just a nice thing to say and she’ll appreciate it.[1]
    • You could try, “I can’t quite put my finger on it, but you’ve got something special going on” or “Whatever it is, you’ve got it!”

Compare her to something beautiful.

  1. Make her blush and make your compliment more powerful. Try not to say vague things she's probably heard before in movies about how her face is like a work of art or reminds you of a symphony. Instead, use other specific examples of beauty to really drive your compliment home and give it some extra “oomph.”[2]
    • For instance, you could say, “Wow! You look like one of Rembrandt’s masterpieces!” or “You’re so peaceful in this photo. It makes me feel like I’m listening to Debussy or another great composer.”
3

Mention something that reminded you of her.

  1. It doesn’t have to be directly related, but if her photo brings something else to mind, tell her about it. She may find it fascinating and flattering that she could inspire something inside of you.[3]
    • For example, you could say, “I don’t know why, but your picture made me think about the movie La La Land! Maybe it’s just because I love that movie and I love this photo.”
    • You could also try something a little silly like, “This picture is like a slice of cheese pizza: it’s perfect.”

Tell her you’ve been thinking about her picture all day.

  1. Talk about when it popped in your head and how it made you feel. She may feel touched and flattered that her picture stuck with you so strongly.
    • You could try, “So, I just have to say, I’ve been thinking about this picture all day! At work, at lunch, driving home—everywhere! It’s really great.”[4]
    • You could also mention how her picture made you feel better with something like, “I was having a super stressful day and this photo completely fixed it.”
8

Focus on her hair.

  1. What girl doesn’t like hearing about how great her hair looks? Tell her you love the way she fixed it and that it’s a great hairstyle. If she recently changed or cut her hair, talk about how much you like the new ‘do. It’s a simple and effective way to brighten anybody’s day.[8]
    • You could keep it super simple with, “I always love the way you do your hair. It’s so pretty.”
    • Try something specific like, “I just love the way you part your hair. It really frames your face perfectly.”
    • You could also say, “Love the new hair! It’s a really great style.”
11

Point out something you like about the picture.

  1. You don’t have to compliment something about her body! Take a look around the photo and choose something that stands out. Bring attention to it with a nice compliment and it’ll make her day that you noticed![11]
    • For instance, if she posts a picture of herself hiking a trail, you could say something like, “Wow! That’s a tough trail. You’re a rockstar!”
    • If she takes a really striking picture of a landscape, you could compliment her photo skills with something like, “You have such a good eye! Nice shot!”

Tips

  • If you’re approaching her in person, smile and wave as you make your way over. It can disarm and open her up to chatting with you. According to John Keegan, being playful and lighthearted helps people connect when first meeting.
  • If you like her, but she doesn’t like you back, try to make up your mind right away that you’re not attracted to her anymore. It can help keep you from longing after someone who’s not interested.
    • Think about the fact that if he doesn't like you back, it's because he's not attracted to you as a person or because he already has a partner.

Warnings

  • Pay attention to any signs or hints she’s giving you. If your compliment seems to make her uncomfortable, back off and don’t make a big deal about it.[13]
  • Don't even think about making morbid comments to her, let alone asking her to wear a miniskirt, shorts that are too short, or a picture of her in a bikini. You will look like a pervert.
