    Expert Answer
Start by listening more than you speak. Show genuine interest by asking questions about the other person, like their name or where they're from. Avoid looking at your phone to maintain focus and show respect. When an awkward pause occurs, take it as a cue to ask more questions and then listen attentively to their responses. Also, you can create humor by cracking a joke, but make sure that it's appropriate for the conversation.

    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Be kind to them, and really listen to anything they say. Make sure you let them know that their opinion is valued. Compliment them (but not too much or it will feel fake). Chat about their good qualities - talents, sense of humor, personality, etc. Just be there for them, and help them feel valued. If they open up to you with secrets, fears, or guilty feelings, don't judge them. Be honest, trustworthy and supportive. Don't brush aside their "trivial" problems, and give them both emotional support and advice if you have any.

  • Question
How can I make my child feel good when she is self destructive?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
You are the most influential person in your child's life. She may not be able to tell you everything about her life, you but should tell her that you are there for her, and explain to her what she means to you as her child. Tell her more than that she is special, tell her that she brightens up your life. Tell her that she is an amazing person who goes through so much by herself, but she isn't alone. She may also be self-destructive because she has a guilty conscience. If it's about school, then help her out. Sit down with her for a good hour, and be patient and help her out and give her tips. Make her feel smart. Don't be critical.

    Michelle Parent

Understand that you are not at fault. And you can and will get better. You are not the only one who has had a bad childhood; you are not alone. Live for yourself today, not for your past. Replace expectations for appreciations. Remove yourself as much as you can from toxic circumstances of your past. Focus on you and your today. Separate logic from emotion. Treat your 5 senses. Give yourself the love that you deserve.
  • Question
My friend is always heartbroken. After that, she will drink a lot of alcohol. How can I help her to feel better and stop drinking too much?
    Tom De Backer
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
It really is acceptable to drink some alcohol, even a skull-splitting amount, if desired. Just not all the time, all day every day. People have been looking for relief from this harsh life since the dawn of humanity, brewing fermented drinks and smoking all sorts of weeds. Don't forbid her to drink, or guilt her if she drank; try and make her think of good reasons why she doesn't want to do that and some alternatives you can do together.
  • Question
How do I encourage someone to get professional help for mental well-being?
    Tom De Backer
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
Nobody can be forced. The person needs to first understand that it's necessary and what the benefits will be. You can suggest it a few times, though not too often. But you can also lower a few thresholds: "You don't have to be mentally ill before you can benefit from such help", "It's getting more and more mainstream instead of taboo", "They can give you insight in thought processes that happen to us all", "You only share the things you want to share", etc.

  • Question
How to stop hating myself when it's all I know?
    Tom De Backer
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
I've always wondered, when we say "it's" instead of "it is", is it one word or two? I ask, because in those ten words you wrote (or eleven) I've already found something positive about you. I, just a guy on the internet trying to answer people's questions if I can, who has never met you and doesn't know anything about you, have found something I do not hate about you, quite the opposite: I respect and admire you for it. You have a question, and instead of crying about it, you ask for answers. That's a good quality. Surely you, who knows yourself better than I know you, could find three or four things you don't hate about yourself. Do more of those things.
  • Question
How do you make someone feel special?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Oh wow, there are all sorts of ways you can make someone feel special! Try spreading some positive energy their way. A simple first step is to try to smile as much as you can when you're around them. Make a conscious effort to do it and you'll look like a much friendlier person that could help brighten up their day. Try talking to them and do your best not to dominate the conversation so they feel like you're listening to them. If you do all the talking in a conversation, people will feel like you’re talking at them. Give them the opportunity to open up and talk about themselves and ask them questions to keep the conversation going. Sometimes, just knowing that someone is interested to talk to them about their life can make a person feel special and appreciated. But don't just ask superficial questions. Show them that you're listening by asking questions based on what they're saying.
  • Question
How do you make someone feel better?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
If someone is feeling down or like they're in a funk, you can try making them feel better by showing them that they're important and they matter. Sometimes, generic compliments or positive words can fall a little flat. But, if you use specific examples and show them why you think they're important, it can help your message have more of an impact. For instance, try bringing attention to their accomplishments. It doesn't only have to be private matters, either. If someone you know accomplished something, let other people know about it. They'll be happy to see that other people take their accomplishments seriously. Sometimes, it's easy for someone to lose sight of their own worth when they're feeling upset or depressed. Try bragging on your friend to show them that you're proud of them and that you care about them. It could help turn around their mood.
  • Question
How do you make someone smile?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
One thing about smiles is that they're super contagious. If you want to make someone smile, start smiling as much as you can around them. Don't make it weird, and don’t try to make your smile as wide as you can, which can look fake. Just slightly turning the corners of your lips up makes you look bright naturally. Make a conscious effort to smile more often. Smiling can help you feel more positive and also spread positivity to the people around you. So if you've got a friend who's feeling a bit down or you just want to get somebody to smile, project your own positive energy onto them through your smile. Chances are they won't be able to help it and you'll see them crack a smile back at you.

    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Start by giving compliments, and share any positive thoughts you have. If you think your thoughts are mean or dark, keep them to yourself. Don't forget to smile, have good body language and maybe even dress in lighter colors, people pick up on the little things.
